Start of drilling works in Hamburg

Drilling of the first well for an Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) on the premises of the combined heat and power station Tiefstack started on December 30th, 2022. Target of the two planned directional wells is the Eocene Glinde formation at a depth of approx. 1300 m below ground level. Both wells will be directionally drilled from a single well pad with a deviation of around 550 m each in order to obtain the necessary minimum distance between the two landing points in the reservoir.

In the future, this demonstration plant will store excess green heat from local industry and waste cycling plants deep below the earths surface during summer and if necessary recover the heat for district heating during the winter.

GTN is tasked with the complete planning and site management of the full subsurface installations.
