Geophysical Exploration in Chile

In November/December 2019 magnetotelluric measurements were conducted at the Tolhuaca-Lonquimay volcanic area as part of the R&D project “BrineMine” (part of the BMBF initiative Client II). Project partners in Germany are Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), SolarSpring GmbH and Geothermie Neubrandenburg GmbH (GTN).

The measurements in Chile were conducted by KIT and GTN and kindly supported by the Andean Geothermal Center of Excellence of the University of Chile. Despite difficult field conditions, a total of 25 measurement stations could be installed which covered both volcanoes as well as the Liquiñe-Ofqui fault zone.

The measured time series are currently processed at KIT. Subsequent geophysical modelling will be performed jointly by KIT and GTN.
